How to Make Your Facebook Friends List Private

5-minute read

Are you worried that your Facebook friends list might be seen by strangers or irrelevant people? Maybe you only want specific people to know your social circle, or you simply want to better protect your personal privacy.

Fortunately, Facebook provides powerful privacy settings that give you complete control over who can see your friends list. This blog will guide you step-by-step on how to easily complete the setup, making your friends list visible only to you, your friends, or anyone you specify.

Step 1: Access Your Privacy Settings

  1. Log into Facebook: First, log into your Facebook account on your computer or mobile device.
  2. Go to Settings:
    • On computer, click your profile picture in the top right corner, then select "Settings & Privacy", then click "Settings".
    • On mobile app, tap the menu in the bottom right (usually three horizontal lines), scroll down to find "Settings & Privacy", then tap "Settings".

Step 2: Find "Who can see your friends list?"

  1. In the left sidebar menu, click "Privacy".
  2. On the right privacy settings page, find the "Who can see your friends list?" option.
  3. Click the "Edit" button to the right of this option.

Step 3: Choose Your Privacy Level

After clicking "Edit", a dropdown menu will appear where you can choose the privacy level that best suits you.

  • Public: Anyone (including people not on your friends list) can see your friends list.
  • Friends: Only your Facebook friends can see your friends list.
  • Friends of Friends: Your friends and their friends can see your list.
  • Only Me: Only you can see your friends list. This is the most private setting.
  • Custom: This option allows for more granular control. You can choose "Share with" (specific friends or lists) or "Don't share with" (exclude specific people).

Choosing "Only Me" is usually the best choice for protecting privacy. If you want to maintain some openness, "Friends" is also a good option.

Additional Tip: About Followers

Even if you set your friends list to private, people who follow you can still see your public friends and public pages you follow openly. If you want to completely hide this information, you also need to find "Who can see the Pages, lists and people you follow?" in the "Privacy" settings, then set it to "Only Me" as well.

Through these simple steps, you can take control of your Facebook friends list privacy. Protecting personal information security starts with these small details!
